My aim at Caterpillars is to provide children with a safe, friendly and nurturing environment.  I want my home to be a space where children in my care feel part of my family.  My aim is for the environment to be allowing and respectful of the whole child so that each child can develop at their own pace.  I am committed to giving children a good start in life and strongly believe that it is important that a strong bond is developed between the child and the carer.  At Caterpillars children learn through both child led and adult led play.  The environment is set up so that children can foster independence and have ample time to explore their environment at their own pace.  I feel passionately about the Montessori principle of following and trusting the child and feel that this is the best way for a child to learn.

I think it is very important that I work closely with parents of children in my care and I fully respect that a parent will know their child best. Therefore, I feel that parental input is invaluable in helping me to care for children in my care to the best possible standard.

I use an on-line system to record progress, observations and plan next steps for each child.  I will also provide parents with a daily diary which provides them with information on the activities their child has undertaken in the day, what they have eaten, when they have slept, any special moments etc.  I will also upload videos and pictures so that parents can log onto the system and view what their little one has been up to during the day.  It is a secure system and a secure log on is provided to each parent so that they can only see information on their child.

All registered childminders have to follow the statutory framework for the early years foundation stage ("EYFS") which sets standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five.  As part of the learning and development requirements, childminders must work in partnership with parents to promote the learning and development of all children in their care to ensure they are ready for school.  The EYFS comprises of seven areas of learning and development.

The three prime areas are:
 - communication and language;
 - physical development; and
 - person, social and emotional development.

The four specific areas are:
 - literacy;
 - mathematics;
 - Understanding the world; and
 - expressive arts and design.
